The rekenrek is a key model for the development of number reasoning. In contrast to manipulatives, models support understanding of a concept while manipulatives are often just a “concrete way” to practice procedures. Models for thinking are representations of relationships. The rekenrek is helpful in promoting both additive and multiplicative thinking.
